About this piece
The J. Gilbert Smith House was built in the early 20th century as a farmhouse surrounded by orchards, reflecting the agricultural roots of what later became the city of Los Altos. Long before streets and neighborhoods filled the valley, this house stood as part of a landscape shaped by seasonal work and everyday family life.
I chose this viewpoint because the large tree in the foreground feels like a silent witness to that history. The tree and the house have shared the same passage of time—watching years unfold, people come and go, and the land gradually change around them. Standing beneath the tree, I felt a sense of continuity that went beyond the building itself. From this angle, the house becomes part of a longer story, quietly protected by the presence of the tree, both bound together by the time they have endured.
