I wanted to paint something that suggested the arrival of spring, so I went for a walk in search of a subject. Then I remembered the purple magnolia in a neighbor’s garden. Its deep red-violet blossoms stood quietly against the fence and sky, blooming before the leaves. On an ordinary residential street, spring had already begun.
